Because Graphic Design is responsible for perfectly categorizing and normalizing the world, there is an opportunity to find ways to reverse this innate characteristic by using it to materialize the discomfort of being surrounded by society's toxicity.

Materializing Toxicity

Cathy Pires

Studies & Hat

The life of a student never consists solely of studying.

Studies & Hat (outside)

There are always other things happening in tangent, so triangles are perfect for this pattern.

Studies & hat (inside)

Using paper as a representative medium of this category, they were scarcely thrown to represent the pressure, chaos, and disappointment, within academia—hence why, the triangles overlap in a mess.

Relationship & Jacket

When talking about relationships, people automatically think about romantic connections, and a significant representation of that is the feeling of being held or holding a loved one.

Relationships & Jacket (front)

Using different materials, which allowed for chemical reactions, the organic pattern was created by thinking of one’s individuality being embraced by somebody else’s in a non-pleasant way.

Relationships & Jacket (inside)

It is invasive and promotes claustrophobia.

Physical Appearance & Purse

When talking about one’s physical appearance, there are so many facets to it – facial features, body shape, and outfits.

Physical Appearance & Purse

There is some showing, but there is concealing. Adding but also removing.

Physical Appearance & Purse

The idea behind the pattern was to show this by using different shapes and varying opacity, with the weight of everything concentrated on the bottom of the object.

Traveling & Shoes

The action of putting shoes on signifies that someone is in motion.

Traveling & Shoes

The idea behind the glitch effect for a pattern was to resemble movement; as if things are passing by fast and cannot be discerned properly.

Traveling & Shoes

It also symbolizes the chaotic nature of trips, even those that are carefully planned.

Traveling & Shoes

Work & Tie

Climbing the corporate ladder in the fastest and most vicious way possible is a pressure not everyone handles or wants.

Work & Tie

Using paper cuts in diagonals to symbolize an upward (or downward) motion, the pattern represents the many paths one has to go through to get to the top—with the possibility of even feeling lost.
